Sound Cannot Travel in Vacuum: Space Is Silent

Those huge explosion sounds in space scenes are a film language choice. Real physics is strict: sound needs a carrier. Sound is a pressure wave in air or water, moving because particles push and pull on each other. In vacuum, there are too few particles to pass the wave along. Space is not absolute nothing; thin gas and plasma regions exist. But the density is so low that you do not get a normal sound experience. This also explains why films do it differently: drama. In science, silence is one of space most realistic signatures.
