1 min read 175 views 5.0 (3 votes) 16 February 2026

Summary

The world's first SMS was sent on December 3, 1992. The message was only two words.

A 22-year-old engineer named Neil Papworth typed "Merry Christmas" from his computer to Vodafone executive Richard Jarvis's phone. Since phones didn't have keyboards back then, he couldn't reply! SMS technology was originally designed just for network notifications. Today, 23 billion SMS are sent daily.
