1 min read 41 views 5.0 (3 votes) 16 February 2026

Summary

The Church saw the fork as "the devil's tool." Eating with hands was God's intended way.

In 1004, Byzantine Princess Maria Argyropoulaina brought the fork to Venice. The Church declared it "excessive luxury and devil's work." When the princess died shortly after from illness, the Church called it "divine punishment." Forks were only accepted in the 17th century. They spread in Italy for eating pasta.
